The Official Visitors Guide

As the Chief Marketing Officer for the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Barbara had a lot to do.  The Cleveland Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland had an outdated creative platform with no central branding and no clear means of communicating the core assets.  She researched competitive communications, audited the bureau's current distribution and spoke with local hotels and stake-holders.

Several important changes were enacted:

  1. The Official Visitors Guide was redesigned to present a clear focused vision of Cleveland as a community with a rich and varied assortment of visitor opportunities. The copy was written from the visitors point of view to give it a more immediate and relevant voice. A visitor directory was developed that made it easy for the reader to quickly find everything they needed.

  2. The CVB had previously contracted with an out-of-market company for the advertising sales and printing of the Official Visitors Guide.  They saw an precipitous erosion of ad-sales pricing and insertions.  An extensive local search was conducted where the contract was finally awarded to the local company, Great Lakes Publishing.  Great Lakes Publishing successfully secured market-rate value for the ads sales.

  3. For the first time in over 5-years an audit was conducted to understand better how the books were being used and distributed.  It was discovered that a significant quantity were sitting in the warehouse and in the hotel housekeeping areas. Consequently the actual print run was reduced resulting in important cost savings.  Alternative communication pieces and distribution locations were explored.
